Freddie and the Fairy

Freddie and the Fairy

by Julia Donaldson (author of The Gruffalo)

This weeks book may be a little controversial with people following the Montessori Method. Montessori believed that children under 6 should not be introduced to fairytales because they are not able to differentiate between fantasy and reality. Although we do some Montessori based activities and follow (loosely) some of the principles, we mainly take the elements that work for us. When we moved into this house, Elise’s room had wallpaper with fairies on it and she was pointing at them so I told her what they were. And then they just became part of her vocabulary.

I really liked this story as a way to introduce deafness (as part of our efforts to diversify the library) Freddie rescues a fairy who says she will grant him some wishes. But because he mumbles she has a hard time hearing him and keeps getting them wrong. The Fairy Queen appears and teaches him the three gold rules so that the fairy can understand him.
